Enrich Your Life Through Studying Nature
What Can We Learn From the Honey Bee?
As we stroll through nature, a honey bee buzzing around and inside of a flower will often meet our gaze. This is a common sight in nature.
Aside from creating honey and sustaining the hive, is this to intrigue us, make us curious, teach us, or is something much grander going on?
Could there be a hierarchy in the hive?
Yes! There are three kinds of bees in the hive – the workers, the drones, and one queen, and the queen is in charge. For the survival of the hive, the worker bees must be committed to many responsibilities.
Fertilized eggs are only produced by the queen, and these eggs give birth to the worker bees. The worker bees can only lay unfertilized eggs, and these give birth to the drones.
Worker bees are some of the hardest and most enduring laborers in nature. They are responsible for removing any bees that have died as well as damaged larvae from the hive. They also feed the drones until the drones can feed themselves.
In addition, collecting pollen not only benefits the hive, but this responsibility of the worker bees also pollinates flowers and much of the food we eat.
Added to their responsibilities, they become nurse bees and take care of the Queen.
The honey bees are a community of interdependent workers, and their efforts create a success that not only serves the hive, but their overabundance of effort serves the human race as well.
From the extraordinary life of a worker bee, there are lessons in accomplishment, strong work ethic, success from working interdependently in their community, and giving back.
By producing more than they need and adding to the survival of humans by providing honey, pollen, and pollination, nature provides another gift to us all.
What Can We Possibly Learn From The Remarkable Egg Tooth?
The chick uses its “egg tooth” to break out of the eggshell and escape into life. Since this is laborious work for this tiny creature, it requires the chick to work and take breaks to get the job done. Consequently, the chick cannot do this in one continuous marathon. It has to rest to regain its strength to return to its instinctive nature. Without nature, humans will die because nature sustains us. The cycle of life is evident in nature when animals are born, mature, provide, and rebirth. This happens with all forms of plants, animals, insects, micro-organisms, every living thing. As humans, we replicate this same life cycle to maintain our existence. Rest assured, we are connected.
“Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
An extra dose of patience would be well-received by most. Nature, in all her wisdom, teaches patience. The creation of a seed, germination, growth, maturity — this all takes time.
Engaging with nature and observing the “natural process” of life makes the value of patience clear.

It’s there for the taking, however, she plays only for those who will slow down and listen, not with their ears but with their heart.
This painting is by Robert S. Duncanson – “On the St. Annes, East Canada,” 1863.
Through observing the colors, textures, lines, light, shadows, and sounds, this artist captured a small but beautiful piece of nature on canvas.
How exhilarated he must have felt as he immortalized this scene in nature not only for himself but for generations to enjoy!
